Bringing the Noise for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Youth Speaks

Every year, Youth Speaks gathers the community to celebrate the ongoing life and legacy of Dr. King. This celebration -- Bringing the Noise for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. -- is not a reenactment of speeches, a slideshow or a polite revue of well-honed platitudes. It is a showcase of young people from throughout the Bay Area who have written, in their own voices, original works that grapple with the thoughts and work of the man, who are working to demand--in their own voices, in their lifetimes--huge leaps into possibility, an ongoing commitment to love like a consuming fire.

This is what SF/Arts curator Laura Fraenza had to say about Bringing the Noise for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. :

Young and gifted, loud and proud poets and writers return to the Nourse every year to honor the memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It’s always a powerful evening of spoken word and performance by veterans and emerging artists; this year promises to be particularly potent as the news of the last year is addressed in pieces that speak to xenophobia and nationalism.
