The Winter’s Tale
About
After a long year, Cal Shakes welcomes audiences back to the Bruns with a sparkling new adaptation of The Winter’s Tale—Shakespeare’s exquisite reflection of our current moment. A story split between tragedy and comedy, between loss and healing, it’s the hope we need.
Join us for a winter’s tale that winds an extraordinary path from rage to redemption, resurrection to reconciliation, in a love letter to the live theater. We’ve missed you. Welcome back.
SF/Arts Curator Insight
This is one of the Bard’s stranger plays, a tale of jealousy perhaps best known for containing the stage direction “Exit, pursued by a bear”—and for a statue that seems to come to life in a spooky way. Cal Shakes artistic director adapted it, along with resident dramaturg Philippa Kelly; he directs a wonderfully diverse cast that includes Safiya Fredericks, Phil Wong, Craig Marker and other prominent local actors. Ting promises “music, dance, laughter and tears.”
