During Carnival week in 1977 Recife, Brazil, widower Marcelo (Wagner Moura), a technology researcher, becomes an unwitting target amid the dictatorship’s chaos. Hunted by mercenaries and haunted by his past, he joins forces with the mysterious Elza and the underground resistance while trying to flee Brazil with his young son. Director Kleber Mendonça Filho and Moura craft a gripping, unpredictable epic that fuses political turmoil, danger, and homage to the films of Filho’s youth into a story that feels both historical and strikingly modern.
