Strange Beauty: Still Icons
About
Lindsay McCrum’s most recent series, Strange Beauty: Still Icons examines contemporary representations of beauty linked to fashion, glamour, and celebrity. The photographs are styled and lit cinematically and have an erotic tension reminiscent of 70s European fashion photography.
SF/Arts Curator Insight
For movie buffs, November is "Noirvember," a 30-day celebration of classic, 1940's Hollywood films featuring hardboiled detectives, hapless grifters, and femmes fatales in chiaroscuro black and white. Lindsay McCrum's widescreen photographs evoke the brooding moodiness of classic noir, but often rendered -- using dolls, rear projection, and seamless collage -- in the golden tones of dusk. Inspired by Hitchcock's Vertigo, the photographer also finds mystery and intrigue in the San Francisco landscape.
