SF/Arts Curator Insight
Serena Cole: Selected Works is one of three shows featured in this church-turned-art-space at 10th and Howard in SF. (The others are CULT gallery's sci-fi-themed "Physics and Fiction" and "Beautification Machine," a techno sculpture that somehow converts partisan news into a "calm oasis." -- I'll believe THAT when I see it!) Cole also transforms her source material, often torn from fashion magazines and combined with other pop cultural fodder, into intricately rendered watercolor wonders that use the desire they create to interrogate the nature of desire. Don't get too lulled by Cole's exquisite use of color and her finely honed craft, these paintings weaponize the haughty glare of the super model to force the viewer into questioning their own notions of power, ownership, autonomy, and beauty.
