About

Presented by Cinecittà, The Italian Cultural Institute and Cinema Italia San Francisco in collaboration with Artistic Soul Association under the auspices of the Consul General of Italy in San Francisco.
This Special Homage to Pasolini, who pushed the boundaries of politics, art and sexuality, follows the complete retrospective that Cinecittà premiered at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of Pasolini’s birth.

SF/Arts Curator Insight

This tribute salutes the Italian director, gay intellectual and poet who melded stinging socio-political critique and transgressive sexuality, yielding films easier to admire than to like. Included are: “Medea,” starring uber diva Maria Callas; Abel Ferrara’s dramatization of Pasolini’s last days — it’s rumored he was by murdered by a male prostitute — and, the notoriously explicit epic on the sadism and sexual depravity of the wealthy, “Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom,” which sets de Sade’s essay on torture in Mussolini’s Italy.
