About

Building on the SF Ballet premiere of Sir Kenneth MacMillan's Song of the Earth, this season we bring Manon, considered one of his most notable and widely celebrated works. Showcasing his expertise of narrative choreography and acute insight into human psychology, this is MacMillan at his best.

The story of Manon's struggle to escape poverty makes it one of the most dramatic and devastating ballets, showcasing the juxtaposition between her impoverished origins and the lavish world she longs to inhabit—paying the ultimate price for true love and freedom.

WHO IT'S FOR: Anyone who relished British Icons last Season, period piece enthusiasts, and high drama aficionados who enjoy watching familial conflict, card sharps, and gut-wrenching heartbreak play out on the stage.

Due to mature themes, this ballet is recommended for ages 14 and up.

SF/Arts Curator Insight

San Francisco Ballet opens its 2024/2025 season in grand dramatic fashion with the company premiere of Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s 1974 “Manon.” The three-act epic saga has all the emotional turns and plot points of a great narrative ballet – passion, envy, desire, opulence, poverty and loss – all portrayed by the artists of this world-class troupe.
