About
La Marisoul y Son California Is a group of southern California-based traditional Mexican folk artists whose goal is to celebrate the diversity of styles within son Jarocho and Mexican folk music. They share a deep respect and love for this genre. After years of cultivating deep roots in this traditional art form in Veracruz, the group has decided to come together to create new interpretations and original music based on traditional and contemporary art forms. La Marisoul Hernandez, Federico Zuniga, Victor Murillo, and Jorge Herrera stem from rich Mexican musical traditions rooted in California and Mexico. The love they share for their culture and community is evident in their passionate and soulful interpretations of Son and Cancion Mexicana.
The evening opens with a performance by Los Hijos de José. Founded by San José musicians Russell C. Rodríguez and Federico Zuñiga Jr., Los Hijos de José first formed as an accompaniment to jarocho musicians traveling through the Bay, including such masters as Liche Oseguera, Patricio Hidalgo, blues artist Hook Herrera, and Quetzal Flores and Martha Gonzalez. Los Hijos de José has since grown into a collective of musicians recording and performing throughout the Bay Area and beyond. For this performance, Rodríguez and Zuñiga Jr. are joined by the outstanding electric guitar/tres of Chris Gonzalez Clarke, whose been part of the collective from its inception, and one of the Bay Area’s most sought out percussionists, Javier Navarette.
