Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, and Wynton Marsalis have all mentored and raved about Joey Alexander, composer and wunderkind of jazz piano, who turns 19 two weeks before his SFJAZZ concerts. Born in Bali and living in New York, he released WARNA, his fifth and first album on Verve Records in 2020. My Favorite Things, Alexander’s 2015 debut album, received two Grammy nominations, making him, at 12, the youngest artist ever nominated for a Grammy award in the jazz category.
