Irmi Selver (1906–2004) had a long and fascinating life, one touched by love and tragedy, challenges and resilience. This documentary portrait, based on her memoirs and codirected by her daughter Veronica Selver and Susan Fanshel, traces Irmi’s personal story across the political and social history of the last century.
SF/Arts Curator Insight
A reflective personal portrait of the resilient Irmi Selver, co-directed by her daughter, a Bay Area filmmaker, and based on Selver’s memoir, relates a tale of profound upheaval, displacement and family tragedy, narrated by Hanna Schygulla, An intrepid survivor born into turbulent times, Selver grew up in an affluent Jewish family in Germany at the turn of the century, fled the Nazis with a husband and young children in tow and started over in New York.
