About

Whether written under the pen name Lemony Snicket (A Series of Unfortunate Events, All the Wrong Questions) or under his own name (Why We Broke Up, We Are Pirates), Daniel Handler’s sardonic sense of humor and deep pathos have engaged readers across genres for over twenty-five years. In his memoir, And Then? And Then? What Else?, Handler reflects on his childhood in San Francisco, the authors who shaped his voice, and the traumatic early-life experiences that have informed the way he moves through the world.

Though he now splits his time between the United States and Italy, San Franciscans are fortunate to claim Pulitzer Prize-winning author Andrew Sean Greer as one of our own. His six works of fiction include the bestsellers The Story of a Marriage, The Confessions of Max Tivoli, Less (which earned him his Pulitzer), and Less is Lost.

SF/Arts Curator Insight

Two of SF’s bright literary lights share some of their favorite writing passages, analyzing them on a sentence level with a shared enthusiasm for language and storytelling. Daniel Handler (author, most famously, of the Lemony Snicket books) and Andrew Sean Greer (winner of the Pulitzer for his novel “Less”) are longtime friends with a delightful rapport. This program, Paragraphs on Ice, is notable: discussions this informative are rarely so fun.
