Traywick Contemporary, in collaboration with Pacific Saw Works, presents opened and split, an exhibition of new work by Santa Fe–based artist Annie Vought. Marking her return to the Bay Area, the exhibition features large-scale cut-paper works built through thousands of hand-cut and collaged elements. Using primarily black oil stick and graphite, Vought creates dense, immersive surfaces punctuated by moments of color and reflective texture.

Annie Vought has graced Bay Area walls with many permutations of her cut paper compositions over the years. I first encountered her reproductions of handwritten letters carved out of paper floating in space at her Mills MFA show. These morphed into delicately chiseled abstract laceworks, whose intricacy made my neck and arms ache empathetically; the artist's Exacto blade slice is so precise. The title of this current exhibition seems to refer to the artist's soul attempting to maintain equilibrium in increasingly turbulent times. Vought's large-scale work has developed into swirling pictorial representation of chaos and conflict. Hands pop out of drowning waves; insomniac eyes struggle to find the peace of sleep.
