SF/Arts Curator Insight
Count on B&B's programming to open an edifying window into contemporary cinema from German-speaking countries. Take Andreas Dresen’s “From Hilde, With Love,” a film The Hollywood Reporter dubbed, “an evocative and affecting portrait of love in a time of genocide.” It revolves around Hilde Coppi (Liv Lisa Fries of “Babylon Berlin”), a real-life, surprisingly soft-spoken heroine of the anti-Nazi resistance, who fell in love, and had a baby in a Berlin prison in WW2, despite the ever-present threat of execution. On the existential, semi-detached-from-realty side is the stylish “Two To One,” where the lives of two men who’ve never met and inhabit opposite sides of the world, seem to echo each other. Kaden (Boyd Holbrook (“Narcos,” “A Complete Unknown”) is a pro ski jumper pushing 35 and on the fast track to oblivion, while Khai is a high-flying exec in Shanghai. So, what happens when they finally occupy same space?
