Undersoul: Jay DeFeo

San Jose Museum of Art

This focused exhibition highlights DeFeo's prolific use of photographic practices as an under-examined but critical facet of her transmutative process. Building upon four works in SJMA's permanent collection as guiding linchpins, the exhibition draws largely on previously unpublished and unexhibited works from the rich holdings of The Jay DeFeo Foundation to consider this important element of DeFeo's practice within the context of her multimedia work, significantly deepening and extending her important legacy beyond painting and drawing.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock has to say about Undersoul: Jay DeFeo :

The little-considered photography of the inimitable Bay Area artist Jay DeFeo is central to this exhibition, organized in conjunction with The Jay DeFeo Foundation. Widely known for her painting, and most famously associated with her most monumental piece “The Rose” (1958–66), the exhibition draws on work from the collection as well as previously unpublished and never-before exhibited works.
