The Young Girls of Rochefort

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

In Jacques Demy's sweetly rapturous, very French, Technicolor love letter to the great Hollywood musicals of the 1950s and ‘60s, characters dance on the streets of a charming coastal town and twins, played by real-life sisters, Catherine Deneuve and Francoise Dorleac, sing about their daily travails and romantic ups and downs. The jazzy score is by the late composer Michel Legrand, who also wrote "Umbrellas of Cherbourg"; Demy supplied the lyrics.
