School Girls, or, the African Mean Girls Play

Berkeley Rep

Just how mean are these mean girls in New York playwright Jocelyn Bioh's 2017 comedy? Bioh was inspired to write the play-- about a group of girls at a boarding school in Ghana who are competing to be Miss Ghana 1986--by the life of her own mother, who grew up in Ghana and apparently was pretty tough herself. These bad-girl comedies never get old, at least if you were ever a girl, and this one, now at Berkeley Rep, has been highly praised.
