Cunningham

Embarcadero Cinemas

The puckish late dancer/ choreographer Merce Cunningham, who used to pad around his Westbeth dance studio in denim coveralls and flip flops and hang out with frequent collaborator John Cage, is the subject of Alla Kovgan's 3-D doc. Interweaving music, dance and rare archival material, it charts his evolution and artistic philosophy, from his lean years as a struggling dancer in post-WW2 New York to his current status as a preeminent visionary.
