UC Berkeley Art Museum Pacific Film Archive

Strange features diverse works from BAMPFA's collection that invoke strangeness & resonate with the spirit of Surrealism. The exhibition goes well beyond the strictly historical bounds of the Surrealist movement itself to explore art from many cultures and time periods. Among the themes it touches on are dreams & visions, wonders & miracles, myth & magic, and life & death. Works from Asia, Europe, and the Americas made over the last 500 years.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock has to say about Strange :

This expansive group exhibition considers art from the last five hundred years to explore aesthetic preoccupations with strangeness – on par with the Surrealists, but throughout history. The roster is a long list of treats, including works by René Magritte, the master of strange, and also Diane Arbus, William Blake, Louise Bourgeois, Bruce Conner, Sylvia Fein, and many others.
