This group exhibition features recent and historical photographic works from six artists: Nobuyoshi Araki, Sam Contis, Jim Goldberg, Sally Mann, Ryan McGinley and Paul Mpagi Sepuya. Each artist has produced or revisited a series of images focusing on a single human subject. Whether captured at brief intervals, or across several decades, each of the photographic series in Character Study presents an intimate records of relationships between family, friends, lovers, and strangers. Taken together, Character Study offers an expanded notion of the classic artist-muse relationship.
Featuring works by Nobuyoshi Araki, Sam Contis, Jim Goldberg, Sally Mann, Ryan McGinley, and Paul Mpagi Sepuya this exhibition features distinct photographic series focused on singular human subjects. The widely celebrated photographer Sally Mann’s series Proud Flesh and Nobuyoshi Araki’s Sentimental Journey, for example, each present serialized portraits of the artists’ intimate partners.
