The Mayor of Folsom Street

GLBT Historical Society

This exhibition recounts the story of "Daddy" Alan Selby, the founder of the iconic South of Market leather and kink emporium Mr. S Leather, within the context of a changing SoMa neighborhood and the emergence of a distinct leather and kink culture. "The Mayor of Folsom Street: The Life and Legacy of Alan Selby" surveys Selby's life from his establishment of Mr. S Leather in San Francisco in 1979, to his community efforts during the AIDS crisis, to his undisputed position as "Daddy of all Daddies" in the city's leather and kink subculture.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock had to say about The Mayor of Folsom Street :

Alan Selby, also known as Mr. S and long known as the Mayor of Folsom Street, opened the iconic leather and kink retail store Mr. S Leather in the SoMa district in 1979; it went on to become a de facto community center and international destination for the queer community. This exhibition celebrates Alan Selby’s contribution as a community organizer with archival documents, art and ephemera.
