AlterTheater presents a Kilroys List honorable mention (Best New Plays by Women Writers). When war crashes from Afghanistan through time into Homer's Odyssey, a battle-scarred soldier seeks refuge in Odysseus' place of solace. On Circe's island, a combat doctor and her commanding officer fight against the most treacherous modern and ancient monsters, determined to leave no one behind.
Laura Shamas, a playwright in AlterTheater’s residency program, wrote this time-traveling drama in which the modern-day war in Afghanistan is transported to Homer’s “Odyssey.” There, on Circe’s island, a battle ensues: a doctor and soldier fight monsters, both modern and ancient. Her world premiere, Shamas says, “centers on a theatrical-psychological experience of PTSD from a female perspective.”
