Matt Mullican: Between Sign and Subject

de Young Museum

This installation comprises fifty works, including rubbings made by transferring the image of a glass etching onto canvas with acrylic gouache and oil stick; light boxes with computer graphics that map the five worlds; and bulletin boards with found household objects, studio drawings, comics, and charts that represent the visual system with which Mullican attempts to categorize the world around him.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock has to say about Matt Mullican: Between Sign and Subject :

American-Venezuelan artist Matt Mullican’s long career has focused on systems of knowledge and meaning. He works across a broad range of media, including drawing, collage, painting, photography, video, sculpture, installation and, perhaps most provocatively, performance under hypnosis. This installation at the de Young is comprised of 50 works, spanning four decades.
