Jordan Casteel: Returning the Gaze

Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University

Jordan Casteel: Returning the Gaze is the first solo museum show for Harlem-based artist Jordan Casteel. Featuring paintings made in the last five years, Casteel's large-scale portraits of Harlem community members are intimate portrayals of often overlooked members of society. Jordan Casteel: Returning the Gaze is organized by the Denver Art Museum.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock has to say about Jordan Casteel: Returning the Gaze :

This is the first museum solo exhibition for Harlem-based artist Jordan Casteel. Casteel’s uncommonly tender, large-scale figurative paintings feature “people who might be easily unseen,” including people in transit, navigating daily life with children in tow. One series features figures clutching different bags on the subway, revealing a universal subway posture familiar to anyone.
