Early Rubens

Legion of Honor

Early Rubens will focus on what is arguably the artist's most innovative period of production, from 1608 until about 1620. It was during these years that Rubens rose to the first rank of Flemish painting through a series of social and artistic choices that laid the groundwork for his international fame and established a visual style that would guide ambitious painters for generations to come.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock has to say about Early Rubens :

Enjoy a leisurely day at the Legion of Honor contemplating the nearly 400-year-old mastery of early works by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), a first-rank Flemish painter with an undeniably virtuosic handling of oil paints, a prolific workshop and a booming business as an artist, all of which is astonishing when one considers the conditions of the time.
