Portia Munson: Her Room/Her World

Bedford Gallery, Lesher Center for the Arts

Her Room/Her World features prints, video, paintings, and installations by New York artist Portia Munson, who approaches environmental and cultural themes from a feminist perspective. At the center of the exhibition is a large installation titled Pink Room, consisting of thousands of discarded pink objects. Pink Room is a visual overload of products that were created to appeal specifically to women and girls, representing mass seduction and consumption.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock had to say about Portia Munson: Her Room/Her World :

This solo exhibition considers the work of Portia Munson. Her central installation, “Pink Room,” presents thousands of cast-off pink objects drawn from women’s lives. Could be the current political climate, but what might once have seemed like an innocuous “girl-y” color presents a new gravitas in the wake of so many pink pussy hats, the Women’s March and the frenzy of coming mid-terms.
