Phillip Andrew Lewis: Synonym

Headlands Center for the Arts

Working across disciplines, artist Phillip Andrew Lewis investigates the attractions and dangers of group psychology, exploring narratives around experimental addiction treatment programs and institutional structures. In the late 1980s, when Lewis was a teen, he was held against his will in a drug rehab program that used extreme methods of sensory deprivation and cultic mind control, an offshoot of the anti-drug society known as Synanon.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock had to say about Phillip Andrew Lewis: Synonym :

Memphis-based Phillip Andrew Lewis was once held against his will in an experimental drug rehab program that was an off-shoot of the anti-drug empire-turned-religious-cult with Bay Area roots, Syanon. In this immersive installation, featuring photography, installation and sculpture, Lewis positions the viewer in an exploration of the dangers of group-think.
