Play the Devil

Museum of the African Diaspora

ENGAGE: Beyond Feathers & Glitter. The day-long event is an interactive symposium where visitors will have the opportunity to explore Carnival through engaging conversations and hands-on learning interwoven with lively performances. Included in the activities is a Film Screening & Discussion with the Director: Play the Devil (2016), written and directed by Maria Govan.

This is what SF/Arts curator Sura Wood had to say about Play the Devil :

Shown during an all-day symposium in conjunction with MoAD’s exhibition of Caribbean carnival and performance art, this film concerns an unconventional 18-year-old male trying to sort out how to be a man while being true to himself, when a chance encounter with a successful businessman upends the plans his family have for his future. An interview with the film’s self-taught Bahamian director, Maria Govan, follows the screening.
