This exhibition is the U.S. premiere of John Akomfrah's "Vertigo Sea" (2015), a three-channel video installation comprised of poetic texts, natural history documentary and film essay paired with an unprecedented presentation of a grandly scaled oil painting by the English Romantic artist J.M.W. Turner, in SFMOMA's media arts special exhibition gallery.
Part natural history doc, part cinematic essay, part intimations of mortality, Ghana-born artist John Akomfrah's three-channel video installation "Vertigo Sea" is a poetic odyssey ruminating on the relationship between water and the unconscious, the ravaging effects of the whaling industry and the slave trade, and the ongoing refugee crisis. His painterly work is paired with J.M.W. Turner's "The Deluge" depicting a flood of Biblical proportions.
