King of Cuba

Central Works

Two combative octogenarians: the first in Cuba, a ruthless dictator, "El Comandante," maintains an ineffectual grip on power while pretending that neither his crumbling nation nor his rapidly deteriorating health are headed for disaster. The second, in steamy Miami, irascible exile Goyo Herrera plots revenge, hell-bent on staying alive long enough to see the dictator to his grave.

This is what SF/Arts curator Jean Schiffman had to say about King of Cuba :

Playwright (and National Book Award finalist) Cristina Garcia developed this world-premiere comedy in Central Works’ writers workshop, based on her book, and it features the wonderful Marga Gomez among a six-member cast of “Cubanx celebrities living in the Bay Area.” The two main characters, octogenarians, are a Cuban dictator (Gomez) and an exile living in Miami. Percussionist Carlos Caro drums throughout; Gary Graves directs.
