Fernando Reyes: Making the Cut

Mercury 20 Gallery/Oakland

The works in "Making the Cut" are made with paper that the artist handprints, then cuts and arranges into patterns. Images reflect many sources: Mid-century Modern; Alexander Calder & Ellsworth Kelly; childhood memories of furniture, buildings, advertising, movies/TV (Jetsons, Laugh In); neon signs of Las Vegas in the 50s/ 60s. They are meant to arouse the senses, conjure emotional states, enliven curiosity, and instigate the telling of a story.
