The Maori Portraits

M.H. de Young Museum

The Maori Portraits: Gottfried Lindauer's New Zealand. Presenting the first major exhibition of Gottfried Lindauer's portraits of the M?ori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, ever assembled in the United States. A total of 31 portraits will be on view.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock had to say about The Maori Portraits :

The portrait painter Gottfried Lindauer migrated to New Zealand to avoid being drafted into the Austrian military in 1874; his work was commissioned by many M?ori chiefs, for his realistic depiction of their facial tattoos, clothing, ornaments and weapons. The de Young presents 31 of Lindauer’s paintings of a wide range of New Zealand’s leaders between 1874 and 1903.
