Gordon Parks: The Making of an Argument

UC Berkeley Art Museum Pacific Film Archive

This exhibit pulls together more than 80 items from the Gordon Parks Foundation archives to offer a comprehensive investigation into the African American photographer's first Life magazine photo-essay, "Harlem Gang Leader" (1948).

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock had to say about Gordon Parks: The Making of an Argument :

This vast consideration of celebrated mid-century photographer Gordon Parks explores his contributions to Life magazine— specifically, his first photo essay for the magazine in 1948, “Harlem Gang Leader,”—and interrogates the role of photography in the telling of a story by examining both the published images and the many images edited from the story.
