Our six-week lecture series uncovering Latin America's long history of the musicians who have defined their art through progressive movements of social change. Week 3, Salsa: The Puerto Rican community of New York City birthed the Salsa phenomenon based in Cuban forms, rhythms and instrumentation in combination with pan-Caribbean elements. The city's socio-political environment had everything to do with the emergence of the musical style.
