Elena Dorfman: Origin of the New World

Origin of the New World is a sequel to Elena Dorfman's 2004 seminal series of photographs, Still Lovers, which examined the domestic relationships between people and their sex dolls. This current series of photographic light boxes was inspired by Gustave Courbet's famous painting, Origin of the World (L'Origine du monde), his shocking and erotic portrait of female genitalia created in 1866.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock had to say about Elena Dorfman: Origin of the New World :

Gustave Courbet’s famous painting, “Origin of the World (L’Origine du monde),” is the basis for this new body of work and solo exhibition. A series of light boxes depict a silicon sex doll, positioned after Courbet’s model, as a stand in for contemporary attitudes and social norms around modern day sexuality, surveillance, technology and virtual reality.
