Elif Batuman

City Lights Bookstore

The author celebrates the release of her new novel, "The Idiot," published by Penguin Press. A portrait of the artist as a young woman. A novel about not just discovering but inventing oneself.

This is what SF/Arts curator Evan Karp had to say about Elif Batuman :

“Not since ‘Don Quixote’ has a quest for love gone so hilariously and poignantly awry,” says Mary Karr of Elif Batuman’s debut novel, “The Idiot.” The book, she says, “recreates for the reader the psychic state of being a child entering language.” Following the daughter of Turkish immigrants as she enters Harvard in 1995, the book tackles all the uncertainties of life on the verge of adulthood.
