On the Road to the Summer of Love

California Historical Society

This exhibition explores the cultural context--from the Beat poets to the experimental art scene--that made San Francisco a magnet for hippies and the center of a social revolution that rippled across the country. Guest Curator Dennis McNally brings together rarely seen photographs and ephemera to tell the story of how the Summer of Love came to be.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock had to say about On the Road to the Summer of Love :

San Francisco’s infamous “Summer of Love” is being celebrated and remembered across the city this summer with exhibitions such as this quiet gem at the California Historical Society, featuring photographs, ephemera and personal memorabilia for a range of lenders. The show looks at iconic moments in Bay Area history, from the late ’50s to the late ’60s.
