A Living Thing, Mel Ziegler: Flag Exchange

San Francisco Art Institute

The American flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. In an act of sly and generous alchemy, artist Mel Ziegler journeyed through all 50 United States between 2011 and 2016 and exchanged distressed American flags flying at civic and private locations -- city halls, post offices, hospitals, homes, and schools -- for new flags. Opening Reception: Friday, January 27, 7-9 PM

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock had to say about A Living Thing, Mel Ziegler: Flag Exchange :

Between 2011 and 2016, artist Mel Zigler traveled through all 50 U.S. states and exchanged the time-worn and distressed flags flying in a variety of locations—including city halls, post offices, hospitals, homes, and schools—for new flags. The distressed flags he accumulated comprise this installation, prompting timely new considerations for the state of the union.
