Walker Evans: A Vernacular Style

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

This major retrospective of seminal photographer Walker Evans views his work through the lens of one of his obsessions -- the American vernacular, or the language of everyday life found in roadside attractions, postcards, storefronts, and signage across the country.

This is what SF/Arts curator Christian L. Frock had to say about Walker Evans: A Vernacular Style :

SFMOMA provides the only American venue—the show is organized by Centre Pompidou in Paris—for this spectacular retrospective of works by groundbreaking photographer and photojournalist Walker Evans. The show features more than 300 prints, many of which are being exhibited for the first time, alongside documents, objects and ephemera from the photographer’s personal archives.
