Japan’s Early Ambassadors to SF

Asian Art Museum

One hundred and fifty years ago, the ship Kanrin Maru arrived from Japan and the first Japanese embassy to the U.S. opened. Focusing on the diplomats and emissaries who came here in those early years, the exhibit highlights artwork and visual media associated with this first mission.

Event Description Timed to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the ship Kanrin Maru and the first Japanese embassy to the United States, this thematic exhibit focuses on some of the first Japanese diplomats and cultural emissaries in San Francisco, and how they responded to the experience of being in America. It highlights more than 40 artworks and other visual media associated with the first mission, with travel to the U.S., and with Japanese artists and cultural leaders active in San Francisco between 1880 and 1927.
Price $12; $8 seniors; $7 youth (13-17) and college students with ID; under 12 free; $5 Thu evenings after 5pm except members and those under 12
